Easy, Homemade Cinnamon Rolls


For any special occasion or holiday, I like to try and make homemade cinnamon rolls. I think there is something special about making them from scratch and I am always on the hunt for the perfect recipe. Well, I found it.

When scrolling though Facebook I stumbled along this recipe and I’m glad I did. They were very easy to make and they look, smell and taste delicious. I can’t want for my husband and kids to get home to try them and let me know what they think.

For the rolls
  1. 1/4 cup warm water
  2. 2 1/4 teaspoons instand yeast
  3. 1/4 cup sugar
  4. 1/4 cup + 2 tablespoons milk
  5. 1 egg
  6. 3 tablespoons butter
  7. 2- 2 1/2 cups flour
  8. 1 1/4 teaspoon salt
For the filling
  1. 3 tablespoons softened butter
  2. 1/4 cup sugar
  3. 2 tablespoons soft brown sugar
  4. 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  5. pinch of salt
For the icing
  1. 3 tablespoons butter
  2. 1/4 cup cream cheese
  3. 3/4 cup powdered sugar
  4. 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  1. 1. In a large bowl, add the warm water, yeast and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Stir and let sit for a couple of minutes until the mixture is thick and foamy.
  2. 2. Mix together the flour and salt. Set aside.
  3. 3. Add the rest of the sugar, the milk and egg to the yeast mixture and mix well. Stir in the butter. The butter will be lumpy, but that's what you want.
  4. 4. Stir in half of the flour mixture and mix together nice and fast until the dough is smooth. Switch to a dough hook, (or a wooden spoon if string by hand) and add the rest of the flour mixture. Stir until a dough forms, adding a little more flour if the dough is too sticky.
  5. 5. Knead in the mixer for about 10 minutes, until dough is smooth and soft. Place the dough into an oiled bowl and cover. Let rest for 10-15 minutes.
  6. 6. Mix together the ingredients for the filling, but not the butter. Turn on the oven to the lowest temperature.
  7. 7. Remove the dough from the bowl onto a floured surface and roll out into a 12 X 8 inch rectangle. Try to make sure it's the same thickness across.
  8. 8. Spread the softened butter over the dough. Sprinkle the filling on top. Starting from the long side, roll the dough into a log, nice and tight. Make 12 slits across, about an inch apart. Cut the dough into 12 pieces, using a sharp knife. Place each roll into a floured 9 inch square baking pan. Cover and place into the oven, close the door and turn the oven off. Leave them to rise in the hear for 60 to 90 minutes.
  9. 9. Once the rolls have risen, remove from the oven and preheat to 350 degrees. Bake rolls for 15 to 20 minutes, until cooked though and golden brown.
  10. 10. Once out of the oven, ice the cinnamon rolls so the costing seeps though all the cracks. Serve warm.
For the icing
  1. 1. Mix together the softened butter and softened cream cheese on high, until fluffy.
  2. 2. Add in the powdered sugar and vanilla and mix until smooth.

  2. Liz, these look ahhhhmazing! I absolutely love two places when I go to the mall: Cinnabon and Auntie Annie’s. This is def a great substitute for when I cant make it out to the mall!

    1. Those are my two favorite places to go too!! Lol, I do love cinnamon, my favorite. These were really good, maybe not as gooey as Cinnabon.. but close!

  3. Homemade cinnamon rolls are the best! I always make them on Christmas morning, it’s one of our favorite traditions! I’ll give this recipe a try this year =)
